Ermelo Ladies Circle: Winter Nights

Ever wondered what a group of ladies, in a small “platelandse dorpie”, do to entertain themselves?

Well, apart for many different things, they decide to get together with a group of Round Tablers and see what they can come up with for entertainment! Wednesday evening, the 15th June, was just such an evening!

Having nothing better to do with their time or health, they decided to go bumming and hang around on a street corner!

Ermelo Round Table 97 in conjunction with Ladies Circle No. 15 got together in the parking lot of a local drinking hole, The Orange Frog to promote the annual Winter Knights!

The owners of the Orange Frog got a warm fuzzy feeling and decided to hire a local comedian (so that the patrons felt part of the circus outside) and charged an entrance fee of either warm clothes, a blanket or food!

Thanks to the assistance of the local community (some deep in their 60’s), a few boma’s, the members and various alcoholic beverages, the presence of the Ladies Circle IPP, Michelle Beart bearing a gift of 10 blankets, the Tablers and Circlers attempted to keep warm! We were even joined by a pair of genuine hobo’s! The shock was so great that the moon went into hiding!!

This was easy until about 4am, when the temperature dropped below freezing! Not even Obbies or Tequila could spread a warm feeling!

However, what did send a warm glow through a Circler or two, was the sight of the local Table Chairman, Heinrich, pushing a vacuum cleaner attached to a generator, through the parking lot!
We left the area cleaner than when we got there!

All in all, we think a good time was had by all…………….
And was it worth it? Judging by the amount of people we are able to warm up, yes, yes and yes again!!

Yours in Friendship

Ermelo Ladies Circle: 2010 – What a Year!

Even though we may come from a small community, we at Ermelo
Ladies Circle 15 are always busy with fun ways to help our community out.

Cansa Walk Relay For Life Witbank – 26 to 27 March 2010 Ermelo
Ladies Circle took part in the Relay for life walk which was held at the Witbank Hertzog Sports Stadium.

Relay For Life is an international movement that unites cancer survivors and the communities that care about them. It is taking South Africa by storm and this year 72 communities will do overnight events to honour those living with cancer, to remember those who lost the battle and to fight back to save lives.  Relay embraces whole communities, from the very young to the old, and highlights include a candle-light ceremony and an inspirational survivor walk. Teams raise funds before and during Relay For Life and these funds are dedicated to CANSA services.

Food Pack Run Project 28 August 2010 – Sleepers Rest
The Food pack run project was a great success; we collected around 800 tins of food that was distributed to the needy in Ermelo. We received a lot of support from our community and local businesses. Certificates of appreciation were handed out to the people that made a big contribution.

We gave food (tin food) to Round Table, Hospice, Aids orphanage and various families.

Sharing is Caring 20 November 2010 at Ermelo Show Grounds.
Roaring motorcycles and jolly music all contributed to the success of the Sharing is Caring run held by the Ladies Circle, and The Pack MCC.

Although the heat was scorching on Saturday, 20 November, the atmosphere was electric. The riders enjoyed a bout of fun at the Douglas Dam early morning, where after everyone moved to the Show grounds. With attendance by EARS (Ermelo Animal Rescue Services), the crowd engaged in numerous activities, such as a tyre-tossing competition and tug of war.  The children could enjoy a horse ride, splash around in the porta-pool or have a quick ride with the riders on one of the numerous quads present on the day. A total of 200 toys were collected on the day.

28 Nov 2010 – Toy Run (JHB)
All the Ladies Circleclubs get together in Johannesburgfor the annual National Toy Run. We distributed our share of the toys collected to the CMR, Methodist church, the hospice in Wesselton, a pre-primary in new Ermelo and 6 families of people that were retrenched over the Christmas period.

Dec 2010 – Hospital run
As always there wasn’t a dry eye after this project. We take some of the teddies collected at the toy run and hand them out to each and every child in our 2 hospitals.

We did two “Bleed for your Community” drives during the year. We managed to get 24 pints on the first
try and 38 pints on the second which was more than 3 times their normal daily take. The second drive was done as a pint for a pint and with this initiative we managed to get Blood from Ermelo Round Table 97!
