LC19 & APD’s JOURNEY

PE Pearls Ladies Circle No. 19’s (LC19) journey started way back in 2011 with The Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD).

In 2011, at the time of being Ladies Circle South Africa (LCSA) President, Sonel Lindeque, our current Immediate Past Chairlady & Treasurer, attended the first Wheelchair Wednesday on behalf of LCSA which was held at the Red Museum in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth.  From there on the relationship between PE Pearls LC19 and APD developed into a great friendship to assist and support each other wherever possible.

In 2012 PE Pearls LC19 in partnership with Round Table Algoa 108, assisted the APD Day Care Centre with setting up a raised bed vegetable garden that generated some income, but mainly assisted with healthy nutritional meals for the children with physical disabilities.  Sadly in 2016 the Day Care Centre closed down due to lack of funding.

Since 2020 PE Pearls LC19 has also been donating APD’s monthly cleaning products needed to run their facility.  How did that come about, well, they asked for assistance and we have only been able to assist them with the help of our sponsors and supporters!  A little goes a long way and even though it might feel like a drop in the ocean, we know that the ocean would be less without it. Seeing the gratefulness in someone’s eyes at the end of the day is priceless.

PE Pearls LC19 also actively got involved, participating in the Wheelchair Wednesday hosted by APD since 2019, spending 4 hours in a wheelchair.  On 27 October 2021, at our chosen day to participate in the Roll-out of Wheelchair Wednesday, APD changed things around a bit to give participants the additional experience of what it would be like to be visually impaired as well.  They got the Nkosinathi Foundation of and for Blind and Partially Sighted People involved with this Project. Having to sit in the wheelchair and to have to guide your assistant who is partially blind, made for a lot of fun and laughter at the time, but the reality of such a situation struck deep.  It is truly not something that you would ever want to wish upon even your enemy.

Sonel, on behalf of PE Pearls LC19, attended the APD Wheelchair Wednesday Handover Ceremony and Report Back meeting held on 1 December at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.  A huge shout out to the main Sponsors – Spar Eastern Cape, NMB Stadium, Network of Caring and last, but not least, congratulations to APD for yet another amazing eye-opening project.
