HANDBAG PROJECT

For the month of August (Women’s month) we opted to collect handbags… old or new… big or small… plain or fancy… any bag would do!

Each bag was filled with 6 items: tissues, sanitary pads, deodorant, soap, facecloth and something sweet.

When we started promoting this project we had a target of maybe 50 bags in mind… however, the ladies in East London had other ideas! We ended up receiving almost 450 BAGS! WOW, an amazing project, so well supported and we were so pleased to have been able to reach so many disadvantaged ladies in the process.

Due to the volume of bags collected, the handover was split between many different beneficiaries, some of which were: Masimanyane Womens Support Centre (50 bags to their safe house); Salem Baby Care Centre (200 bags to the mom’s that come in daily and monthly to seek assistance for their children) and the rest shared between Without Walls, Mobile Clinics and Women with Vision in Mthatha.

I don’t know how many spare handbags are left in East London…but I am sure this will be a project to try again… if not next year maybe 2018!
